Soviet Occupation Zone
1948 - 1953 (Standartized system of all four zones):
SB = Soviet Occupation Zone Brandenburg 36 = County Teltow, Capitol Mahlow both sides handpainted, front plate from motorcycle
SN = Soviet Occupation Zone Saxony-Anhalt 10 = Halle / Saale
SL = Soviet Occupation Zone Saxony (Leipzig) 22 = Dresden
SL = Soviet Occupation Zone Saxony (Leipzig) 43 = County Glauchau Plate for dealers and transfers of motorcycles
The standartized system of all four zones was introduced in 1948. In the Soviet Occupation Zone this system was in
use until 1953 (in the West until 1956). Contrary to the western plates a little "48" was embossed in the East Zones.
The standard colours have been white on black. The transfer plate showed above was white on red. In the Western Zones transfer plates have been red on white.
The code list for the five states is as follows:
SB = Soviet Occupation Zone Brandenburg SL = Soviet Occupation Zone Saxony (Leipzig) SM = Soviet Occupation Zone Mecklenburg SN = Soviet Occupation Zone Saxony-Anhalt
ST = Soviet Occupation Zone Thuringia
The code for the East sectors of Berlin was still GB = Greater Berlin from the first series. These plates have been made up in black on white.
The first two digits were allocated to the different counties. You can look up the complete codelist here.
