Later plates from 1976
Since 1976 plates for cars had the standard format 450 x 90 mm. Rear plates for trucks were 310 x 170 mm and for motorcycles 230 x 130 mm. The three letter code has been introduced in 1974 in the most districts
because they've run out of combinations. Most times the number was made from self-adhesive black foil and the base plate made of iron sheet, but there are also several other styles known. Some examples from my
collection follow:
Car plates:
O = District of Suhl red seal since 1987 in use
I = District of East-Berlin
brown seal 1980 - 86 in use
I = District of East-Berlin red seal since 1987 in use
Y = District of Dresden
seal from the reunification period; West German style but with a little car symbol instead of a county shield
Rear truck plate:
I = District of East-Berlin blue plastic seal 1975 - 80
Motorcycle plate:
K = District of Halle blue plastic seal 1975 - 80
rare homemade style; letters and numbers sawed from plastic
K = District of Halle brown seal 1980 - 86
H = District of Magdeburg West German style plate with embosses letters and numbers
seal from the reunification period; West German style but with a little car symbol instead of a county shield
