1. Nationale Volksarmee (NVA) / People's Army
The People's Army of the GDR was founded at 1. March 1956. Since May 24, 1958 it was a member of the Warsaw Treaty.
The code VA was meant for "Volksarmee" = People's Army

2. Grenztruppen / Frontier Troops
The code GT was meant for "Grenztruppen" = Frontier Troops

A new code was introduced by the last minister of defence Mr. Eppelmann in 1990. The code GS was meant for "Grenzschutz" = Border Patrol
3. Volkspolizei / People's Police
The code VP was meant for "Volkspolizei" = People's Police
The numbers have been issued on a district basis. The numbers in front of the dash show the issuing district. The following table shows the codes which have been used:

After the political change the V has often be removed. The code P then stands for "Polizei" = Police. On this motorcycle plate you also can see a West German inspection seal.
